I’ve talked about this before, but to continue on my rant over the less savory aspects of the game I’m including this incredibly difficult character that I think wins the award for the most offensive racist character in a modern AAA game. Deus Ex’s other faults are technical and forgivable, this is not. I don’t know what the voice actor was thinking, I don’t know what Square Enix was thinking but someone, somewhere should have stepped in on this process and told them it was not ok. I’ve lived in impoverished areas, I’ve lived in areas that were diverse racially but I have never encountered another human being who talked like this. I doubt that in any branch of futurism regardless of how distant it is from our reality that anyone will talk like this. The only time I have heard this has been of black men and women doing Uncle Tom character depictions from movies 50-60 years ago.
Square Enix has sort of apologized but attempted to coat it with a thin veneer of portraying diversity. This wasn’t diversity, this was a cruelly incompetent creative decision and one that has significantly soured my experience.
