Download Free eBooks: Cory Doctorow

The other day we discussing 3d printing and all I could think about was Cory Doctorow’s Makers which introduced me to the near future possibilities of the technology.  If you like geeky science fiction then Cory Doctorow is your man.  Why would a decent author give away his books for free? In Cory’s own words:

“Why am I doing this? Because my problem isn’t piracy, it’s obscurity (thanks, @timoreilly for this awesome aphorism). Because free ebooks sell print books. Because I copied my @**off when I was 17 and grew up to spend practically every discretionary cent I have on books when I became an adult. Because I can’t stop you from sharing it (zeroes and ones aren’t ever going to get harder to copy); and because readers have shared the books they loved forever; so I might as well enlist you to the cause.”

You can download the following ebooks and more from Cory’s website.  You can also check out  the links below in order to download them in every imaginable format including the Amazon Kindle.  Cory is an excellent, visionary writer and you will not be disappointed.

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom

“Jules is a young man barely a century old. He’s lived long enough to see the cure for death and the end of scarcity, to learn ten languages and compose three symphonies…and to realize his boyhood dream of taking up residence in Disney World.” - From the publisher

Makers

“Perry and Lester invent things: seashell robots that make toast, Boogie Woogie Elmo dolls that drive cars. They also invent entirely new economic systems. When Kodak and Duracell are broken up for parts by sharp venture capitalists, Perry and Lester help to invent the “New Work,” a New Deal for the technological era. Barefoot bankers cross the nation, microinvesting in high-tech communal mini-startups. Together, they transform the nation and blogger Andrea Fleeks is there to document it.” – From the publisher

Little-Brother

Little Brother

“Marcus, a.k.a “w1n5t0n,” is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works–and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school’s intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems.

But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they’re mercilessly interrogated for days.”  – From the publisher

Eastern Standard Tribe

“A comedy of loyalty, betrayal, sex, madness, and music-swapping.  Art is an up-and-coming interface designer, working on the management of data flow along the Massachusetts Turnpike. He’s doing the best work of his career and can guarantee that the system will be, without a question, the most counterintuitive, user-hostile piece of software ever pushed forth onto the world.” - From the publisher
