Just yesterday I was thinking about Power Girl. For the uninitiated Power Girl is an alternate universe version of Supergirl. Unfortunately Power Girl’s claim to fame is this extraordinarily silly costume with an impractical cutaway that highlights certain feminine features. For a male parallel imagine Superman with a cutaway that would leave his abs exposed. Completely silly and unnecessary and one of those things that I think is a prime example of what alienates women from getting into comics. Power Girl is an interesting character and there are a lot of well written and interesting female characters in comics, but a casual observer would never know due to some of the cruddy choices that the male dominated industry has made for them.
Apparently artist Michael Lee Lunsford was feeling the same way and drew a series of female superheroes dressed in battle ready clothing. I don’t think this diminishes the characters in any way and actually helps us relate to them better as real characters.
