Was doing some talking this afternoon about The Shining and the recent documentary Room 237. If you haven’t seen or heard about Room 237 it superficially discusses the many theories concerning the film, but honestly is more about obsession and conspiracy theory, I loved it. Check out info about the documentary here.
It dawned on me that I didn’t really have any completely nutsoid theories about one of my favorite films, so I thought I would take a couple of minutes to come up with one. You my beloved readers get to hear about it first, it may change the world.
As you may be aware Ridley Scott slipped in a little easter egg into the Prometheus Blu-Ray linking The Blade Runner and Alien universes. In short it basically says that Peter Weyland knew Dr. Eldon Tyrell and they shared notes, probably over chess.
By itself that is pretty darn nifty. Dr. Tyrell is played by the calm, cool, collected Joe Turkel, seen here:
If you are a fan of The Shining you already know that Joe also plays Lloyd the Bartender, who happens to be the best gosh darn bartender from Timbuktu to Portland, Maine. Or Portland, Oregon, for that matter. Good ole’ Lloyd can be seen here:
What if the events of The Shining were actually a simulation run by the Tyrell corporation to test the viability and mental stability of memory implants in newer model Replicants? Tyrell personally entered the simulation to monitor progress for a short time before handing full oversight to his subordinate Charles Grady who took the name Delbert for the exercise.
Mistakes in the implant program itself and instabilities caused by the implanted memories conflicting with present facts (See the earlier Kubick film 2001 to find out why that is a problem) cause distortion errors which take the form of architectural impossibilities in the hotel, hallucinations, voices and paranoia. They eventually cause older model Replicants (Jack) to malfunction and cause newer model Replicants (Wendy, Danny) to improvise which was the preferred result. This was despite all models being made aware of the parameters of the simulation beforehand.
Unfortunately lack of proper supervision and underestimation of the metal trauma caused by the conflicts resulted in the unfortunate death of Tyrell Corporation employee Dick Hallorann. The simulation was then forced to shut down. In an effort to continue the monitoring of the Jack model Replicant the simulation was placed in a closed loop repeating the parameters for study including a previous scenario of a July 4th 1921 ball so that data for different types of implants could be recorded.
It is interesting to note that Tyrell employee Grady never had children and the memories of the demise of the “Grady Twins” appear to have been spontaneously and collectively created by Replicants in response to implant artifacts. This warrants further analysis.
Thank you and goodnight.
