Watching: Black Hole

I love Black Hole, the art direction, the CRAZY story with heaven and hell metaphors, Ernest Borgnine, Anthony Perkins, Maximilian Schell, Roddy McDowall and Slim Pickens. (Two Slim references in the same month, not bad eh? The other was for seeing him in The Howling and discovering a The Shining connection.) and weird film distortions. Essentially a dark remake of Forbidden Planet.

I can imagine the Disney meeting where it was pitched.  “Kids these days like these Star Warsy films, we should make one” The white haired man said as he chomped on his cigar.

What we ended up with was a modern science fiction film with fifties sensibilities in effects and design.  Definitely some great ideas here, but I will never forgive them for giving Yvette Mimieux an old lady haircut.
